Making Your Space Unique to You

Have you ever walked into someone’s home and felt an overwhelming fear that you were going to mess something up or get something dirty? Today, it probably has happened more often than not. Home decor trends are leaning more and more on the neutral side, and we are seeing tons of Instagram posts of rooms filled with white area rugs, beige couches, and vases full of pampas grass. Although this look can be extremely serene and calming, it would be easy to create a personal space that resembles every other space on the internet.

I am here to tell you that your living room can still be trendy without giving off Stepford Wife vibes. There are so many ways to keep a neutral palette in your home and still make your interior design unique to you. By adding subtle pops of color to your living spaces, you can create an Instagram-worthy look.

  1. Play Around with Bold Furniture

One benefit to having a neutral palette to work with is that you now have a perfect foundation to play around with unique and bold furniture. A bright couch is a perfect element for curating a comforting and inviting space.

2. Create an Accent Wall

If you are like me and love a nice fluffy white rug and a tan sectional sofa, creating an accent wall may be the perfect option for you to add some color. You can also add texture to your accent wall by using patterned wallpaper or building a batten wall.

3. Add a Wild Rug

I am a sucker for hardwood floors, but in the winter months, they definitely can do a number on your feet. Adding an area rug to your room can bring a room together and give it that cozy feeling that we like to have exuded in our home. While neutral rugs are tempting, they can be incredibly difficult to keep clean. Finding a colorful rug can add that unique feel to any room. These days you can even find vintage rugs at a local thrift store for a fraction of the cost!

4. Mix Up Your Decor

Picture frames, wall hangings, vases, and knick-knacks are all ways that we bring our personality into the look and feel in our homes. These elements can be a variety of different colors, shapes, and textures that can all add that pop of color you are looking for.

5. Add Plants!

This is perhaps my favorite tip because as much as I love interior design, I equally love house plants. Plants are an easy and refreshing way to add color to any space. There are also plenty of articles and studies that claim that having house plants in your home is good for your health. Don’t have a green thumb? No worries! There are plenty of house plants that are almost indestructible, require very little maintenance, and are beautiful additions to any side table.

There are a variety of ways to add color to your home and make your spaces unique to you. Don’t be afraid to go against the Instagram and Pinterest gain and start experimenting with color in each room in your house!
